Ana Dorothea Therbusch, born Liszewska, initially trained as a painter under her father George Liszewska in her native Berlin. She soon moved to Paris where she became a member of the Academie in 1767. She married in 1770 and returned to Berlin. The present picture was executed the year after her return from Paris and reveals her debt to the French portrait painters of the day, in particular, Jean Baptiste Greuze.
