Provenance
The easel was used by Theodore Gericault (1791-1824) in Paris between 1813 and his death. It remained in the studio after his death, (it being too large to pass through the doors) and was used by subsequent artists' working in the studio, who apparently always referred to it as Gericault's Easel. The current owner's uncle and aunt were artists' and lived in the studio from the 1930s until 1997, when the easel was removed from the studio through a top floor window.
Sale room notice
The easel is almost definitely late 18th early 19th Century, as opposed to late 19th early 20th Century, as is written in the catalogue.
