Sarah Kent (see B. Robertson op. cit., p.56) comments 'In 1965 Frink made a number of 'Standards' - small predatory birds perched like horrid vultures on top of narrow pillars that resemble the legs of her standing figures, but pared down to the bone as though the flesh has been torn off. Their titles imply an ironic criticism of militarism and the glorious deeds normally rewarded by military honours. There is something peculiarly repellent about the way these ensigns peer arrogantly down from their perches, as though gloating over the defeated whose flesh feeds their ambitions and pride'.
