These finely modelled stands, which combine richly cast rocaille mounts with panels of Chinese lacquer and striking kingwood veneers, are likely to have originally served as stands for the display of porcelain vases. Stands similarly employed of an earlier date appear in a view of the Grande Galerie (or Galerie des Glaces) at Versailles (illustrated in Louis XIV, Fastes et Dcors, Paris, 1960, exh. cat., no. 621). The rich combination of materials indicates they may have been conceived by one of the marchands-merciers specializing in such fashionable wares, such as Thomas-Joachim Hbert or Lazare Duvaux.
