THE FAMILY SCENES THAT WERE SO FASHIONABLE IN THE LAST QUARTER OF THE 18TH CENTURY WERE AMONG BOILLY'S FAVORITE SUBJECTS. THE PEASANT AND BOURGEOIS INTERIORS THAT HE PAINTED FROM THE REVOLUTION TO THE DIRECTOIRE OFFER A FASCINATING AND REALISTIC INSIGHT INTO CONTEMPORARY LIFE. ALTHOUGH CATS OFTEN FIGURE IN HIS WORKS AS INCIDENTALS, BOILLY DID ON OCCASION MAKE THEM THE FOCUS OF THE SCENE, AS IN THE PRESENT WORK, WHOSE TITLE CAN BE TRANSLATED AS FEEDING THE CATS, AND IN OTHER COMPOSITIONS SUCH AS PRENDS GARDE AU CHAT.
WITH ITS RUSTIC INTERIOR, THE PAINTING IS SIMILAR TO A WORK NOW IN LILLE (SEE THE CATALOGUE FOR THE EXHIBITION, BOILLY, OCTOBER 1988- JANUARY 1990, P. 130, NO. 47), AND THUS DATABLE TO AROUND 1825.
A VIRTUALLY IDENTICAL VERSION OF LA BOUILLIE POUR LES CHATS IS ALSO KNOWN (ANON. SALE, SOTHEBY'S, MONACO, 26 MAY 1980, LOT 534, AND THEN ANON. SALE, ADER PICARD TAJAN, PARIS, 25 JUNE 1991, LOT 73, OFFERED ON BOTH OCCASIONS WITH ITS PENDANT LA LECTURE). HOWEVER, ALTHOUGH SIGNED AND SOLD AS BOILLY IN EACH SALE, ETIENNE BRETON AND PASCAL ZUBER HAVE QUESTIONED THIS ATTRIBUTION AND CONSIDER THE WORK A COPY AFTER THE PRESENT PAINTING, WHICH WILL BE INCLUDED IN THEIR FORTHCOMING CATALOGUE RAISONN OF THE ARTIST'S WORKS.
