Lot Essay

Jean-Franois Leleu, matre in 1764

The distinctive profile of this commode, with outset rear corners, is shared by two other examples by Leleu, one in the Muse des Arts Dcoratifs, Paris, and one at Versailles, illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Franais du XVIIIe Sicle, Paris, 1989, p. 510. The distinctive flower-filled entrelac frieze is identical to the frieze on a bureau plat in this sale, lot 176.
