Araki Tomei (1817-1870) was born in Kyoto. He studied first with Goto Tojo (1790-1862), seventh master of the Kambei Goto branch line and then with Goto Ichijo. Millet was his specialty and he is thought to have been influenced by the designs of his friend, the painter Hayashi Ranga (1821-1869).
