Lot Essay

Yokoya Soyo II (b. ca. 1700) attributed these pieces to Yokoya Somin (1670-1733), who developed meticulous takabori carving based on the Goto style. Somin was the founder of the Yanagawa, Ishiguro and Omori schools and other schools, independent of the shogun, known as machibori kinko. Soyo II was adopted by Somin and was chosen to succeed him.
