A THREE-CASE WOOD INRO
late edo--meiji periods (late 19th century)
Of rectangular form inlaid in ivory, green stone, horn, shell, mother-of-pearl, and ebony with Hotei carrying a bag of treasures and with playful Chinese boys (karako), the reverse with two karako carrying a pair of shoes strung on a pole, the ground carved with a wood and a gate on a diapered and ishime ground, interior cases roiro; fitted with a matching wood manju netsuke decorated with a Chinese boy trying to catch a butterfly on a ground carved with bridge posts and chrysanthemums, the reverse with a shaped shell inlaid and carved with a seascape on a ground of carved peaches and flowers and a coral bead ojime
