The arms are those of van Aersen van Sommelsdijk or van Aerssen van Sommelsdyk.
Baron van Aersen van Sommelsdijk was born in The Hague on August 5, 1725. He first embraced a successful military career, serving in the infantery as a major-general and colonel. In 1766, he became member of the conservancy board for canals and dykes. Other civil and administrative functions include the superintendance of the estates of Leeuwenhorst abbey and the bailiwick of Gorichem and 't Land van Altena. He received a knighhood on January 14, 1772.
This branch of the van Aersen family died out upon his death in 1793 as his son and only heir, Franois Jean, died unexpectedly in 1784 at the age of twenty. Leaving no issue, the barony became extinct (For a detailed account of the van Aersen family, see D. G. van Epen, van Aerssen, The Hague and Brussels, 1902).
A soup tureen and stand by Engelbart Joosten, The Hague, 1766, with comparable naturalistic twigs applied on the body and cover, is in the Gemeente Museum, The Hague (A. L. den Blaauwen, Nederlands zilver, Amsterdam, 1979, no. 132, p. 274).
