Boat-shaped fluted, on a spreading conforming base, the bowls bright-cut engraved with wigglework and trailing foliage, one side engraved with a crest, the other with initial, the interior gilt, marked under bases

Lot Essay

Jonathan Bateman was the third son of Hester Bateman. His first mark, entered in partnership with his brother Peter, was registered at Goldsmiths' Hall on December 7, 1790. Jonathan died on April 19, 1791, and work bearing his mark is extremely scarce.
