The arms are those of Stanhope, as borne by Philip, 2nd Earl Stanhope (1714-1786). On July 25, 1745, he married Grizel, daughter of Charles, Lord Binning, son of the 6th Earl of Haddington.

The 2nd Earl Stanhope and his wife were described in a letter written by George Macartney to Henry Fox in 1762: "Lord S. is a queer little man, who seems to know very little of the World...He is a fellow of the Royal Society, which people abroad look on as a vast recommendation. He is a furious patriot, being Mr. Pitt's cousin and his most extravagent Admirer. His lady is a sister of Lord Haddington; she is a woman of a very good understanding, and is extremely polite and amiable."(Letters to Henry Fox, Lord Holland, Roxburghe Club, p. 168 as quoted in Complete Peerage)
