Of circular form on molded base, the sides flat-chased with panels depicting exotic Chinamen holding flags, fans, birds, one gazing at a Moor's bust, one panel engraved with a coat-of-arms within a foliate cartouche and palm wreath and surmounted by a crest, with matted panels between, with ring handles issuing from lion's masks enclosed by flat-chased foliage, the removable scalloped collar flat-chased with exotic birds and foliage under an applied foliate scroll rim, the interior engraved with a presentation inscription, fully marked under base, the collar struck four times with maker's mark

The arms are those of Mill.

A monteith with similar chased Chinoiserie scenes by George Garthorne dated 1684 was sold at Sotheby's, New York, May 21, 1992, lot 138. Another closely related example by the same maker dated 1688 and with a similar detachable rim was sold at Christie's, London, October 29, 1947, lot 157.
