FIRST EDITION. "Billroth, the founder of the Vienna School of Surgery, may also be called the founder of abdominal surgery" (Norman). Two operations for cancer of the stomach were named Billroth I and II, after his work. He was one of the first to introduce the discipline of antisepsis into the Continental operating room.
