BOUCHER DE CRVECOEUR DE PERTHES, Jacques (1788-1868). De l'industrie primitive ou des arts leur origine. Paris [n.p.], 1846.

8o (250 x 160 mm). (Minor spotting and foxing). 39 lithographed plates. Original green printed wrappers, uncut (worn, spine starting). Provenance: Comte Narcisse-Achille Salvandy (1795-1856), diplomat and minister (presentation inscription and bookplate).

FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY. Boucher was the director of the customs-house at Abbeville, but also found time to pursue his interests in archeology. He discovered flint implements and other remains of Stone Age settlements, and published this pioneering evidence of prehistoric man in a series of monographs which were largely ignored until Charles Lyell (1797-1875), the British geologist and evolutionary biologist, visited the area in 1859 and accepted Boucher's findings.
