Elliotson was one of the first to perform surgery on hypnotized patients in England. He was successful in many cases, but faced great suspicion and distrust, particularly from Thomas Wakley, editor of the Lancet. He was eventually forced out of the public positions he held, including that of professor at the University of London. A report on one of the first operations performed under mesmerism in England (SEE LOT XXX), and of the opposition that arose when this success was reported to the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society.
