FIRST EDITION. Emmet had been taught by James Marion Sims (1813-1883), the leading American gynecologist of his time, and in 1855 Sims had appointed him assistant surgeon at the Women's Hospital of the State of New York. "Emmet's treatise provided a comprehensive and valuable account of the surgical treatment of vesico-vaginal fistula based upon Sim's technique, which involved the use of silver wire sutures" (Norman).
