SNOW, John (1813-1858). On the pathology and mode of communication of cholera. [Offprint from the London Medical Gazette 44 (November 30, 1849)]. [London, 1849].

8o (207 x 130 mm). Collation: s8. 8 leaves, paginated [1] 2-15, v blank. Caption title. (Very slight marginal discoloration.) Later 19th-century half morocco, original(?) plain lower wrapper preserved, blank filler leaves at end (lower margins of text block unevenly trimmed, joints and extremities rubbed). Provenance: Wellcome Library (inkstamps including withdrawal stamp).

VERY RARE OFFPRINT of Snow's first journal article on cholera. This article was printed after the 1849 monograph, and not before, as erroneously implied by Garrison-Morton and stated in the Norman library catalogue. The text of the article differs entirely from the monograph (which is dated August 30, 1849), containing a greater amount of supporting data, including examples from foreign countries. Snow continued to keep the medical community informed of his research on cholera, in further journal articles and in the second edition of his treatise on cholera (see lot 1307). His investigations of this devastating disease may give him "an even greater claim to recognition as a benefactor of humanity" (DSB) than his researches into anesthesia. Garrison-Morton 5106; Norman 1967.
