First Edition in German, published the same year as the Danish first edition, the first comprehensive description of the form of reproduction named by Steenstrup "metagenesis," for the alternation of sexual and asexual reproduction. "This phenomenon had previously been described by Chamisso, but Steenstrup included a greater number of observations, based on a significantly wider range of subjetcs, and provided an important chapter on its meaning" (DSB).
