THACKRAH, Charles Turner (1795-1833). The effects of arts, trades, and professions, and of civic states and habits of living, on health and longevity. London: Longman, 1832.
8o (212 x 137 mm). Modern black morocco gilt. Provenance: THE AUTHOR'S COPY interleaved, with his signature and autograph note ("private copy") on title, and with autograph revisions and notes on the text and the interleaved pages.
Second edition. THE AUTHOR'S OWN COPY, WITH EXTENSIVE ANNOTATIONS OF THE FIRST ENGLISH TREATISE ON OCCUPATIONAL MEDICINE. Thackrah's book played an important part in promoting the need for legislation to protect both factory and other workers from the worst of the working conditions and health hazards of the Industrial Revolution. The second edition, published only one year after the first, covered the diseases related to a further 120 professions. The author's notes in this copy are clearly in preparation for a third edition. This was never completed as Thackrah died of tuberculosis at only thirty-eight, only one year after this edition was published. Norman 2064A.
