Lot Essay

This unusual chair pattern incorporating ribbon-twist back and rippled stiles does not relate to any known patterns published in the late eighteenth century. Its heavily constructed elm seatrails, and distinctive splay to the back legs suggest that these were possibly manufactured in the Northern Counties, by a firm such as Gillows of Lancaster.

A pair of armchairs of this design and possibly from the same set was sold from the collection of James Hall, New York, Parke-Bernet Galleries, New York, 24-26 October 1946, lot 164.
