Oblong, the front depicting the Queen of Diamonds and the back the King of Spades in mediaeval costume on white ground within stylized floral and scroll border, the sides of the body and hinged cover with stylized floral and foliate scrolls on maroon ground, the top of the cover with a pink roundel with Russian inscription 'For the benefit of the Imperial Foundling School' beneath a crowned double-headed eagle with ribbon and wreath borders on white ground, with twisted ropework edges, gilt interior, marked under base
