DaCosta Kaufmann points out that the present picture is the earliest clear evidence in paint of Savery's visit of 1606-7 to the Alps, where he had been sent by Rudolf II, according to Sandrart. For the left part of the composition the artist used a drawing now in the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, inv. no. THC 3246 1863 (Spicer, op. cit., no. C42 F44; Müllenmeister, op. cit., illustrated p. 214)
