Provenance

By descent to the present owner from a sister of Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Cork, who in 1602 purchased the whole of Sir Walter Raleigh's Irish property.

Lot Essay

It has been suggested that the sitter may be a member of the Farnese family; he also resembles Francesco Maria II della Rovere as portrayed by Federico Barocci in a drawing in the Uffizi (exhibited Bologna, Museo Civico, Federico Barocci, 14 Sept.-16 Nov. 1975, p. 250, no. 320, illustrated)
