Lot Essay

Mayer considered the present picture, which shows Murillo at about the age of forty, an autograph work of c. 1668-70. It corresponds with a print by Juan Palomino of which two impressions are in the Carderera Collection in the Biblioteca Nacional, Madrid (Angulo, op. cit., III, pl. 637); Angulo, judging from an old photograph, considered it 'not impossible' that the present painting is based on the print
