Lot Essay

Louis Bonomi (born in London 10 November 1777, died in Rome 1784) was the eldest son of Joseph Bonomi, the architect (1739-1808). Joseph Bonomi had been born in Rome but in 1767 came to England where he worked under the Adam brothers and Thomas Leverton. After a brief return to Italy 1783-4, he established himself in practice in London, where he gained a considerable reputation as a designer of country houses, being elected A.R.A. in 1789 by the casting vote of Sir Joshua Reynolds. He married in 1775 Rosa Florini, a cousin of Angelica Kauffman. An inscription on a label on the back of the present portrait of their son records that it was 'painted in his Mother's Cousins'
