Small gold bottle of shuttle-shaped section, both sides centred with oval medallions painted in camaïeu brun with youths in classical costumes within translucent green borders, on a ground of translucent blue enamel with champlevé engraved scrolls and flowerheads, the sides with vertical white enamel stripes adorned with champlevé engraved gold flowerheads, concave plain gold base, with gold chain, fitted shagreen case

Lot Essay

This kind of grisaille on a brown ground enamelling has been attributed to craftsmen such as James Morisset, Louis and Simon Augustin Toussaint, William Charron and possibly Gabriel Wirgman (see C. Truman, The Gilbert Collection of Gold Boxes, Los Angeles, 1991, p. 319).
