Paris, 1767/1768, with the charge and discharge marks of Jean-Jacques Prevost, maker's mark rubbed
Oval blonde semi-translucent box, the cover set with an oval gouache miniature painted in brown sepia on a blue ground, depicting two scantily dressed girls holding a garland of flowers before a smoking Altar of Love, a crouching dog, a pigeon and laural crowns aside, the gold mount surmounted by a ribbon-tied cresting, with laurel below, the cover, sides and base encrusted with three-colour gold piqué posé ringlets surrounding two-colour gold flowerheads, the pierced gold rims chased with a bright-cut ribbons twisted with a leaf garland and a reeded ribbon, the pierced thumbpiece with shell centre and scroll, leaf and laurel garland cresting, the partly bright-cut gold mounts intertwined with leavy ribbons
