During the war, Cadell joined the Royal Scots, 9th Battalion and served in the trenches of France, and later as a second Lieutenant in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. Throughout his active service, he made sketches of his fellow soldiers, many of which were sold in aid of the Red Cross. Such were the popularity of these drawings that a firm of London Publishers produced a compliation of these works in Jack & tommy, (1916).
