Hibs won their second-ever Division 1 Championship this season with 48 points, Rangers being runners-up on 46 points.

James Robert Combe was born in Leith, Edinburgh on 29th January 1924 and joined Hibernian in April 1941 from Inveresk Athletic. Between then and June 1957 when he retired, he played in excess of 350 games for Hibs scoring 67 goals, many of these as club captain. Upon his retiral in June 1957 he was appointed Hibernian assistant trainer and thereafter there was a brief spell with Dumbarton as manager in 1959. He played a total of three times for Scotland at full International level and the same amount for the Scottish League. He also won further Championship medals in 1951 and 1952 and was a League Cup runner-up in 1951
