The Glasgow League Championship and the Inter-City League were competitions which were started to fill spare Saturdays when the S.F.L. was still of small size. The Glasgow League Championship was first played for in 1895/96, but was stopped in 1898/99, with the Inter-City League starting up the following season. The G.L.C. restarted in season 1904/05 and ended the following season because of the expansion of the S.F.L. The teams who contested the trophy in season 1904/05 were Partick Thistle, Rangers, Celtic, Queen's Park and the eventual winners Third Lanark.
As a centre/right-half, James Comrie played around 80 games in total for Third Lanark between 1903 and 1906. He also played for Third Lanark in the 1905 and 1906 Scottish Cup finals, winning the former and losing the latter.
