Lot Essay
Although the first cap in the above lot is dated 1890 it does, in fact, relate to the England v. Ireland match which took place on 2nd March 1889 at Everton, England defeating Ireland 6-1. In the match against Scotland played on 5th April 1890 at Glasgow, England and Scotland drew 1-1. In the match against Wales played on 15th March 1890 at Wrexham, England defeated Wales 3-1. In the match against Ireland played on 7th March 1891 at Wolverhampton, England defeated Ireland 6-1 and in the match against Ireland played at Belfast on 5th March 1892, England defeated Ireland 2-0.
Harry Butler Daft was born at Radcliffe-on-Trent, Nottinghamshire on 5th April 1866 and joined Nottingham County in the 1880s before having a brief spell with their City rivals Forest in early 1893, returning to County in August of that year. With Nottingham County he won a F.A.Cup winner's medal in 1894 and a runners-up example in 1891 and he played a total of five times for England at full International level. He also appeared for the Football League on two occasions and was a F.A.Committee member from 1884 to 1885. An all-round sportsman of his day, Daft was a reserve for England at Lacrosse and also a Notts County Cricketer.
