Lot Essay

The above corner flag is the property of Alan Foster who was a member of the Sheffield Wednesday ground-staff at the time of the 1966 World Cup Tournament and is believed to be one of eight which were supplied by Umbro for use at Hillsborough during the tournament up to the quarter-final. Six of these flags were in use at all times during the tournament (four corner flags and two placed at the half-way line), with two of them being taken by the West Germany party after the quarter-final tie against Uruguay played on 23rd July 1966 when West Germany defeated Uruguay 4-0.
