Lot Essay

The identity of the artist has long been obscure, as he was often confused with his father, Jan Gerritsz. T. Döring, Studien zur Kýnstlerfamilie Van Bronchorst, 1993, has corrected this and has compiled oeuvres for all three members of the Bronchorst family. Within Gerrit's oeuvre Döring distinguished between his history painting, which seems to have been mostly influenced by the Utrecht Carravaggists such as Gerard van Honthorst, and the small scale landscapes in the style of Cornelis van Poelenburgh. The present lot clearly falls in the last category.
