Lot Essay
The man-of-war Frisia/Klein Frisia bears the coat-of-arms of the province of Friesland on the stern. It was built in 1653 and carried 34/42 guns. It took place in the Battle in the Sont in 1656 under Captain Albert Pietersz. de Boer and in the Battle of Lowestoft in 1665 under Admiral Stellingwerff and Van Wassenaer. In 1676 the ship was still in service under Captain Jochem Jansz. Kroon (see C.W.J. Schaap. "De Admiraliteit van Friesland - Haar Vlagofficieren en Schepen", in Jaarboek Fries Scheepvaartmuseum en Oudheidskamer, 1982, p.58).
We are grateful to Dr. R.B. Prud'homme van Reine for identifying the man-of-war and for his help in cataloguing this lot.
The attribution has been kindly suggested by Drs. C.W. Wansink of the RKD. She compares it to pen and ink drawings by Vitringa such as the one sold in these rooms, 26 November 1984, lot 166, ill., which show a similarity in the waves, the sails and the type of shipping. Thus the present picture is the first known penschilderij by the artist.
