Lot Essay

A signed version with some differences in the figures and boats was offered at Christie's New York, 12 January 1994, lot 123, ill. A version comprising only the left part of the composition was sold in these rooms, 10 November 1992, lot 178, ill. The trekschuit ferry to Leyden was towed along the river and provided a regular service. The occupants of the trekschuit in the present picture were previously thought to be Prince William of Orange and his entourage.
