The present whereabouts of the original, signed and dated1681, is unknown. (O. Naumann, Frans van Mieris the Elder, 1981, II, pp.125/6, n0121, ill.). It is probably the picture mentioned by A. Houbraken, De Groote Schouwburgh, 1721, p.12, as left unfinished at the artist's death and finished by his son Willem. The popularity of the composition is apparent from the numerous copies by the studio (O. Naumann, op. cit., p.126, N0 121 a-g lists seven copies). These copies must have been executed under the supervision of Willem, who took over when his father Frans was still alive. Hence the signature F. van M....
