Lot Essay

The Dordrecht born artist was educated by Michiel Versteegh and Arie Lamme. In 1808 he was one of the élève pensionnaires of King Louis Napoleon who were sent to Paris and Rome. He studied for a year and a half in Paris under Jaques Louis David and then went to Rome because the Roman Campagna was much more suited for making studies after nature.
