Lot Essay

Theodoor Matham, son and pupil of Jacob Matham (see lot 113 in this sale), was mainly active as an engraver of portraits and reproductions of works of art. His drawings are rare, particularly his landscapes. A signed view of Paris also including Notre Dame is in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, F. Lugt, Bibliothèque Nationale, Cabinet des Estampes, Inventaire Général des Dessins des Ecoles du Nord, Paris, 1936, no. 245, pl. LXVI. 'Een Gezigt te Parys' by Matham mentioned by Lugt as described in the Busserus sale (see Provenance), may be identified as the present lot. Other drawings by the artist are in the Amsterdams Historisch Museum, B. Broos, M. Schapelhouman, Nederlandse Tekenaars geboren tussen 1600 en 1660, Amsterdam Zwolle, 1993, nos. 81-2, illustrated.
