This is based on Rembrandt's 1636-7 drawing of Saskia showing her baby Rumbartus to an elderly man, formerly in the Collection of H. Becker, Dortmund, O. Benesch, The Drawings of Rembrandt, London, 1973, II, no. 420, fig. 506.

Lot Essay

The present lot is close to a group of drawings Koninck did in the early 1660s. A comparable study from this group of an old woman holding a child is in the Museum Boymans-van Beuningen, Rotterdam, J. Giltay, The drawings by Rembrandt and his school, Rotterdam, 1988, p. 202, no. 96, illustrated.
