The present lot may be compared to other watercolours by the artist, done during a journey through the Sabine mountains in 1812. Many of these large-format studies were only executed with watercolour and at later date finished by the artist. According to Fransje Kuyvenhoven, who has seen the original, the precipice in this drawing is autograph, but the pines in the foreground and the island may later have been added by the artist's brother Mattheus Derk Knip (1785-1845). Watercolours of similar subject and format are in the Prentenkabinet, Leiden, the Amsterdams Historisch Museum and the Noordbrabants Museum, Den Bosch, E. Bergvelt, M. van Boven, J.A. Knip 1777-1847, The Hague, 1977, nos. 49-50, 53 and 54, illustrated.
