The City of Den Briel was taken by the Watergeuzen on 1 April 1572 against the Spaniards. The Watergeuzen, a resistance group supported from England by Queen Elisabeth I, had been sailing to conquer the city of Enkhuizen when their twenty-four ships were forced into the river Maas because of strong headwinds, leading them to Den Briel.
