Lot Essay

When Kees Maks reached the age of 75 he executed a painting in which he tried to show all the highlights of his oeuvre. This large canvas (355 x 475 cm) depicted a Spanish dance-couple, a nude, a guitar player and other characters from the world of cabaret and theatre, all arranged in front of a large circus scene canvas. The composition was shown as Modellen in het atelier at the jubilee exhibition of De Onafhankelijken in Amsterdam in 1953, were it drew much attention. The present lot is a preliminary watercolour for the masterpiece in question (cf lit: H. Redeker and A. Venema, C.J. Maks, Amsterdam 1976, p. 68-69).
