Of rectangular form, carved in relief with four tiers of figures, the top tier with a central female figure held by two soldiers holding guns, the second tier with a kneeling mother and child before a seated chief and attendants, a figure on the left fondling the breasts and waistband of a standing female figure holding a vessel on her head, the third with a soldier on horseback, his bridle held by a seated figure whilst another soldier carrying a spear follows, the lowest tier showing a feline attacking an antelope watched by two armed soldiers, each panel bordered by bands of carved crosses

Lot Essay

The scenes include elements of humour typical of the work of Areogun such as the muslim figure in the second tier fondling the breasts and waistband (for the Yoruba the most erotic part) of a woman. The scene pokes fun at muslims as having too much libido for their own good.
