Lot Essay

The decoration on this vase is after a design by Cornelis Pronk. The trellis-diaper pattern is identical to that on the 'Arbour' design by Pronk, and is also found on the 'Plume' pattern attributed to him. Howard & Ayers, China for the West, Vol. I, fig 298a, illustrate a vase of this rare square flaring shape with a comparable botanically correct enamelled flower.

A five-piece garniture of this design was sold in our New York Rooms, 30 January 1993, lot 72, and a pair of identical vases to the above lot was sold in our London Rooms, 10 May 1993, lot 132.
