LATE QING DYNASTY
Details
A view of the German Settlement at Tsin Tao
Late Qing Dynasty
The bay with shipping, Chinese and European buildings, some with the black, white and red flag of Imperial Germany and the Imperial German Navy ensign, in the background the mountain Lao-shan, ink and colours on silk (some staining and minor tears)
92.2 cm. x 134 cm.
The German Navy had long wanted a foothold in China. In November 1897 Germany seized the bay of Tsin Tao, using the murder of two German missionairies in Shan Dong Province as an excuse. This was later formalised in a treaty giving the Germans a 99-year lease of this territory. However, Germany lost this East Asian colony to Japan following the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.
