A rare Imari gin-cask
Circa 1700
Modelled as a bijin seated on a stylised push-cart, decorated in iron-red, green, aubergine and black enamels and gilt on underglaze blue, her kimono decorated with flower-heads and foliage including paulownia, the cart decorated with a writhing dragon, plum blossom and paulownia, the spoked wheels with applied pine and axle, the detachable head with hair tied to the back, the front with an aperture and animal mask tap (some damages and restoration)

A similar example is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Others were sold in our London Rooms on 18 November 1986, lot 57 and 20 November 1990, lot 721.
