Lot Essay

The present work is a study for the central man and woman who meet in the middle foreground of The Resurrection, Port Glasgow (Tate Gallery, London), 1947-50, (Bell 358i). Spencer saw these two figures as himself and Hilda Carline, who in the finished oil are shown emerging from their respective graves. A similar drawing was exhibited in London, Royal Academy, Stanley Spencer, R.A., September-December 1980, no.243, p.203.
