Lot Essay

Spencer's Christ's Entry into Jerusalem, (Leeds City Art Gallery), 1921, (Bell 70) is set in Cookham High Street, like its companion picture, Christ Carrying the Cross, (Tate Gallery, London, 1920, Bell 38). Christ appears riding on a donkey while people stream out of the brick villas to watch him go by; the group of women behind the railing in the background were recalled from a scene in Devon.
