Lot Essay

This composition relates to wash studies executed circa 1920 and can be compared with an oil on paper work, A Music Lesson at Bedales, (Private Collection), 1921, (Bell 80). In 1937, Spencer described the composition as 'a mistress playing on a piano and on a violin and on a viola. A little boy behind the lid of the violin. All the back filled by the audience of children' (see K. Bell, op.cit., p.406).
